Sailfish are two species of fishes in the genus Istiophorus, living in warmer sections of all the oceans of the world. They are blue to gray in color and have a characteristic erectile dorsal fin known as a sail, which often stretches the entire length of the back. Another notable characteristic is the elongated bill, resembling that of the swordfish and other marlins.

Kuala Rompin

Pintu gerbang Kuala Rompin

Endau-Rompin National Park is made up of a lush, pristine tropical rainforest. Covering an area of 50,000 hectares (500 sq. km). Endau-Rompin is the second largest national park in Peninsular Malaysia after Taman Negara and has been upgraded to a national park in 1980s. With rock formations dating back some 250 million years, Endau-Rompin is mostly hills with some prominent sandstone plateaus. It also happens to be the watershed of several rivers such as Endau River, Selai River and Jasin River.
The first scientific study of the area was conducted in 1892 by H.W. Lake and Lieutenant H.J. Kelsall. With the aid of the study, the forest complex of Endau-Kluang was gazetted as a forest reserve in 1933. Later in 1972, the forest reserve was expanded to include Lesong forest reserve in Pahang.

Endau River, Endau-Rompin
In the same year, the federal government came up with a proposal to federally protect 2,000 km² of the complex as a national park. At that time there was no legal mechanism to create a national park. In 1980, the National Parks Act 1980 (Malaysia) was passed by the Malaysian Parliament. However, dispute between federal and state powers prevented the creation of a national park in the area at that time. Five years later, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks proposed roughly the same areas to be gazetted as wildlife sanctuary to protect the endangered Sumatran rhinoceros.
In the early 1980s, logging was a major concern in Johor. It was discovered in the decade that the logging had come up to the boundary of the forest reserve and threatened to devastate the area. The Malaysian Nature Society, in an effort to promote public awareness surrounding the issue of Endau Rompin conducted a scientific study in 1984 into the area, completely financed by the public. The expedition discovered 25 new species. In the same year, the government of Johor finally allowed 251.95 km² of the area to be gazetted as a national park. The national park was further enlarged after Pahang and Johor agreed to such action. In 1993, the Endau Rompin National Park was finally created with the total area of approximately 900 km² of forest cover.

Jasin River, Endau-Rompin
According to legend, the Jasin River and the Endau River were dwelled by Were crocodile and thousands of dangerous crocodile. The man-eaters often endanger people in the area. Several attack cases and near death experience were a common story among the people who use the river for their daily activities. The ‘Orang Asli’ (aborigine) believe that the fear might be over if they could kill the crocodile king. After hunting for a period of time the ‘Orang Asli’ finally catch the crocodile king and then throw it at Seganggong hill. The crocodile was unable to move as it trapped at the rocky hill. The trapped crocodile causes the water to change it direction to the Endau River. Finally the crocodile died and the waterfall then named after the sank crocodile or known as the ‘Buaya Sangkut’.

As night falls, the forests become alive with the spooky sounds and fireflies and beetles with fluorescent wings and tails.
Endau-Rompin is best to contact your travel agent for guided tours, as the area is largely underdeveloped and infrastructure is minimal. Entry permits are a must and visitors will have to provide two passport sized photographs and a photocopy of their identity card or passport. Endau-Rompin is accessible by road from KL and Singapore but it is advisable to use 4WD. It takes 5 hours from KL. Your travel agent will be able to provide further details as to the itinerary of your tour. The tour will typically include all meals, accommodation, and transport to and from Endau-Rompin, as well as transport within the park.
During the monsoon season that covers from November till March, the park is closed to the public. Further, fishing is banned from September till October during mating season.

Pantai Tanjung Resang / Telok Gorek/Godek
